This guide walks you through installation, setup, importing existing wallets, and funding your new wallet safely.

What Is the Coinbase Wallet Extension?
The Coinbase Wallet extension is a browser-based crypto wallet that lets you interact with decentralized applications (dApps), trade on decentralized exchanges, collect NFTs, and manage crypto across Ethereum and EVM-compatible networks. It is available for Chrome and Brave browsers. The extension acts as a bridge between your browser and the blockchain, allowing you to connect to popular platforms like Uniswap and OpenSea without needing your mobile device.

A critical distinction: Coinbase.com is a custodial exchange where Coinbase holds your crypto on your behalf. Coinbase Wallet is non-custodial — your private keys are stored directly in your browser, and only you can access your funds through your recovery phrase.

Installing the Extension
To begin, install the Coinbase Wallet extension from the Chrome Web Store (or the Brave browser extension store). Never download it from third-party websites, as unofficial downloads may contain malware designed to steal your recovery phrase. Once installed, the extension will guide you through either creating a new wallet or importing an existing one.

Creating a New Wallet
If you're new to crypto, select "Create a new wallet" when prompted. You'll then choose a username — this is how other Coinbase Wallet users can find you, and note that usernames cannot be changed later.

Next, the extension generates a 12-word recovery phrase. This phrase is the master key to your wallet. Write it down and store it in a secure, offline location. Coinbase cannot recover this phrase for you — if you lose it, you lose access to your funds permanently. After confirming you've saved the phrase, create a password to unlock the extension on your computer. This password is separate from your recovery phrase and is required each time you access the wallet.

Importing an Existing Wallet
If you already have a crypto wallet, you can import it into the Coinbase Wallet extension. Select "I already have a wallet" and choose to import using your 12-word recovery phrase. This process works with most Ethereum-based wallets, including MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Phantom, and even the mobile Coinbase Wallet app.

To find your recovery phrase in your existing wallet, navigate to the settings or security menu. In MetaMask, go to Security & Privacy and select "Reveal Secret Recovery Phrase." In Trust Wallet, tap Settings > Wallets and choose "Show Recovery Phrase". Once you enter the phrase into the Coinbase Wallet extension and create a new password, your assets will be accessible.

You can also connect a Ledger hardware wallet directly to the Coinbase Wallet extension for enhanced security. Select "Connect Ledger wallet" during setup, plug in your device, open the Ethereum app, and approve the connection request on your Ledger screen.

Funding Your Wallet
After setup, you'll need crypto in your wallet to start exploring. There are several ways to fund it. You can transfer crypto from your Coinbase.com account by clicking "Buy (+)" in the Assets tab, selecting "Connect my Coinbase account," and choosing the amount to send. Alternatively, you can send crypto from any external wallet by copying your Coinbase Wallet address and pasting it into the sending platform. You can also purchase crypto directly within the extension using supported payment methods.

Security Essentials
Your 12-word recovery phrase is the sole key to your wallet. Never share it with anyone, and beware of phishing attempts — Coinbase will never ask for your recovery phrase. Store it offline, such as on paper or in a secure password manager. The password you create for the extension only unlocks the wallet on your current browser; it does not control your on-chain assets. For maximum security, consider pairing the extension with a Ledger hardware wallet.
